A recent news broadcast on My9News in New York City shed light on the Asians which don’t fit the model minority. Many are poor immigrants stuck in dead-end jobs with no way out. Like other minorities who don’t speak English well or at all, many of them are unable to take advantage of government programs due to language issues. Other minorities which have been in the US for generations are sometimes slightly better off since they can take advantage of the programs without the language issues.
Others seem stuck due to threats from employers. Yet, the thing that struck me the most is the level of Asian to Asian donation. It’s such a small percentage compared with other minorities. I do find that a lot of Asians do care about the immediate family, but it seems that helping out other Asians outside of that isn’t as high of a priority. Sadly there are even cases where people don’t even take care of the immediate family as seen in the interview with the former chef.
It’s a gripping story. I recommend watching it all.
